Slavery in The North and South

Introduction:

Slavery was a Southern institution. The abolition of slavery in the North, which began in the revolutionary era and was largely completed by the 1830's, to divide the United States in the slave South and North is free (Jackson Maurice 2010). As it happened, slavery came to define the essence of the South: to defend slavery was to be pro-Southern, whereas opposition to slavery was considered anti-Southern. Although most white Southerners did not own slaves (the proportion of white families who owned slaves declined from 35 percent to 26 percent between 1830 and 1860), slavery, more and more a set of South of the rest of the country and the Western world. If at the time of slavery were common in much of South America to the mid-19 century, it remained only in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the southern United States. In an era that celebrated liberty and equality, slave-holding southern states were backward and repressive.

Abraham Lincoln

In 1860, the election of Abraham Lincoln for president on a free platform of soil off the major political and constitutional crisis, as seven states in the Deep South seceded from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. Beginning of civil war between the United States and the Confederacy in April 1861 resulted in additional offices in four states of the upper South (Carey Kitson2007). Four other slave states-Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Missouri remained in the Union, as well as a new state of West Virginia, which seceded from Virginia. Over time, slavery thrives in the Upper South and could not make it to the north. But there were pockets of the North on the eve of the Revolution, where the slaves played a key role in economic and social order: New York City and northern New Jersey, Pennsylvania and delivery of rural towns in Connecticut and Rhode Island. North managed to develop a large-scale agricultural slavery, such as later occurred in the Deep South, but it has nothing to do with morality and a lot in common with the climate and economy.
