Social Issues of Puerto Rico and Official Language Movement

Introduction

The aim of this essay is to discuss the social issues of Puerto Rico and official language movement. The historical debate on the political status of Puerto Rico is focused on the question of whether this unincorporated territory of the United States should join the American union as a new federal state, maintaining the current relationship under the definition of the Commonwealth in terms of the 1952 Constitution or become an independent country in form of free association with the United States as a sovereign state with full control over its national and territorial issues.

Independence of Puerto Rico has a history similar to that of Cuba and of Haiti, and that this was where the rebels were exiled to the Spanish islands, when luck was against them. Governor of Puerto Rico had decided to remove the official character of the English language to keep only the Spanish as an official language. This change will be canceled by the next governor, to calm the situation (José, 2006). Puerto Rico Puerto Rico is a free associated state to the United States with a status of commonwealth.

Discussion and Analysis

In the nineteenth century most of Latin America was released in Spain, except Cuba and Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico remains under the authority of the United States, but has a wide range of autonomy. Puerto Rico has one delegate in the House of Representatives; the people of the island do not have the right to vote in congressional elections. They cannot take part in the primaries and the presidential representatives have their national conventions of the Democratic Party and the Republican, which is a direct donation, does not guarantee the right to vote in presidential elections.
