Introduction

The Zapatistas of Chiapas made ??their first public appearance, that of 1 January 1994 as an armed movement, with a declaration of war on the government Mexico and the occupation of several towns. In the ten years that have passed since then, the approach and strategy of struggle of the Zapatista movement have changed substantially. The EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) in fact abandoned the armed struggle and pledged to push for changes social and political wanted by peaceful means (Holloway, Pelaez, 1998).

While the EZLN never delivered formally weapons and retains the ability to return to them as a last resort their weapons during these ten years have been his word, his moral qualities, his organizational capacity and convening power. In the decade that has passed since 1994, the Zapatistas have become the most striking social movements in the world that he had much resonance in a variety of settings and fights. It has also been one of the movements discussed, along with, for example, the Movimento Sem Terra in Brazil. It has been analyzed as indigenous movement, such as peasant movement radical democratic movement and has been benchmarked on a range of academic debates on globalization, neo-liberal capitalist development, and Marxism and the future of 'Left', to mention some of the most important.

This article examines the Zapatista struggle over these ten years: present some of the most important approaches of the Zapatistas and examine the development of strategies using the time. We will go about the study in a systematic manner, to give an overview about the Movement, its history and throw light on some important implications on the Movement in the light of famous theories.

Overview of the Zapatista movement and its history

Zapata is not a unique symbolic heritage of the popular sectors of Mexican society. The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is an armed Mexican military-political character. His inspiration is the policy Zapatismo, the Marxism and libertarian socialism , and its military structure is the guerrilla. The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) Mexican armed organization composed of farmers belonging to indigenous groups Chamula, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Chol and Lacandon. In 1994 he rebelled, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, commanded a small military leaders, led by Subcomandante Marcos mestizo. The name of the movement to honor the revolutionary, military character “Emiliano Zapata” (Harvey, 1998). He was a renowned Mexican Revolution Leader of his time.

Zapata was born in Southern Mexico.
