Southwest Florida: The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project

Introduction

In the recent time, United States has put a lot of attention towards improving ecosystem across the country. These concerns can be well evaluated by US effort to projects like the Great Lakes, Florida Everglades (Everglades), and Chesapeake Bay. Restoration efforts have originated, in part, from controversies surrounding water supply and quality, federal laws (i.e., laws that protect endangered species or regulate water quality, and others), sport and commercial fishing, and environmental degradation (Susan 241). Ecosystem restoration initiatives have typically been accompanied with high expectations and publicity.

The Restoration Of Water Flow in the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project: Southwest Florida

This plan provides a complete cleaning and restoration serving the problems of quantity, quality and water flow rate and level. Restoration projects that began in the 1990's is supposed to redirect large amounts of water to the Everglades.

Some areas south of Cocohatchee river and the land around the well-populated areas of Miami will again be wetlands. The maps of the surface flow and annual average hydroperiod illustrate the flow of water and the surface covered by water in Southwest Florida in three distinct periods of time:

about 1950-before significant agricultural and urban development.

in the late 1990's, and

near the 2050-when they have completed and restoration projects.

However, the preservation and restoration of the Southwest Florida Everglades will probably not be as easy as opening a floodgate of a dam and pump water to the affected area. The restoration of water flow to these wetlands has had positive and negative consequences. Some of the complicated factors have caused controversy. For example, in the Wildlife Refuge, the Everglades are concerned with the restoration of natural flow and level of water through the Everglades, as this could further endanger the Southwest Florida.
