Maintaining Control And Staying Safe, While Supplying Their Learning Needs: Strengthening Classroom Management Strategies And Techniques

Abstract

Maintaining control and providing an environment conducive to learning has been an important issue since research began to be collected on classroom management in 1960. Since this initial action, classroom management has advanced tremendously; however, according to James, and McCormick, there is a need for teachers to develop new classroom practices. Gray, noted, “of the 85,000 public schools in the United States, roughly 16,000 incidents relating to behavior occurs per day; which equates to one incident every six seconds” According to Doyle, there are concerns that pre-service curriculum do not adequately stress concepts and skills needed for prospective teachers for dealing with classroom disruptions.

Statistical rates for school violence in the United States are not among the highest in the world; however, school violence has been identified as a major problem in the American school system. He further noted that this is a growing problem which has risen considerably since the mid 2001s. In light of the escalating aggressive and violent nature of today's student population, concerns are raised reference to prospective, as well as, novice teachers' level of preparations in dealing with students who are disruptive and aggressive in the classroom.

CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Problem Statement and its Impact

The outcome of this research will impact teacher, students, and administrative staff. If new teacher programs, as well as, in-service programs are placing appropriate emphasis on ensuring the highest level of instructions pertaining to classroom management is administered; and if teacher are effectively implementing these learned strategies and techniques; they will be able to deal more effectively with aggressive and violent student behavior. As results, the level of classroom disruptive incidents will decrease, creating an environment conducive to learning for all students; and administrators will be able to spend less time administrating disciplinary action and more of their time concentrating on meeting the school goals.

Aims and Objectives

The aim and the objective of the research are as follows;

Are middle schools novice and new teachers capable of implementing effective classroom management techniques and strategies in their training program for dealing with the more aggressive students in the classroom?

Are in-service and new teacher program placing emphasis on teaching strategies for coping with aggressive students in the classroom?

Are novice and new teachers effectively implementing learned classroom management strategies and techniques in the classroom?

Purpose of the Research

According to Wong K. and Wong R. (2009), “It's the teacher and how the teacher is trained that produces student achievement gains” (p.331). The purpose of this research study is to investigate teacher preparation and in-service training programs—in particularly classroom management strategies and techniques for new and novice ...
