Superfund Sights

Overview of Superfund

Superfund provides funds that are used to restore and improve the sites containing hazardous waste. Funds are used when concerned agencies cannot determine the person or company responsible for pollution in the area identified by the Bureau of Remediation and Technology Innovation Superfund (Superfund Remediation Office of Innovation and Technology). It comes under the Agency of Environmental Protection in the United States. It also performs its actions when the person or company cannot pay for the work to clean up, improve or restore the affected area (Hird, 1994).

Superfund Sites

The area, site or place affected by the hazardous waste is known as "Superfund site". As such, the contaminated area was identified by the program to restore the area to protect the community and environment. Upon notification of a potentially hazardous waste site, the EPA conducts a Preliminary Assessment/Site Inspection (PA/SI) which involves records reviews, interviews, visual inspections, and limited field sampling. Information from the PA/SI is used by the EPA to develop a Hazard Ranking System (HRS) score to determine the CERCLA status of the site. Sites that score high enough to qualify for the entire program then proceed to a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS). The RI includes an extensive sampling program and risk assessment in order to define the extent of the site contamination and risks. The FS are used to develop and evaluate various remediation alternatives. The preferred alternative is presented in a Proposed Plan for public review and comment.

Daily Lives

This program positively affects our lives. There is a diverse range of pollution hazards that can be produced by various contaminated sites. This may incline the process of ozone depletion, and it may also affect our lives in negative ways. The air pollution contaminates our environment, and it is responsible for a multitude of diseases. Until 1990, ARCO had been fighting the EPA and the Superfund law, but around 1990, Stash remembered, ARCO began to use a new tactic— soliciting and incorporating the views of the community. As the 1980 came to a close, the community's desire for economic recovery led the new strategy of ARCO. It is not entirely clear whether what became known as the MESS Committee active Anacondas who sought the public participation process of the EPA and sought economic development instead of fences. It bubbled up from grassroots sources or was encouraged to life by local representatives of ARCO. It is clear that very quickly the group's energies were amplified and channeled by the oil giant. After Gene Bukovich jokingly floated the idea of the golf course, the whole tenor of ARCO's presence changed.
