Recent events highlighted in the press have once again made pupil protection and safeguarding very topical. As a school we take our safeguarding duties very seriously and as well as making the necessary checks on those who work with our pupils we also strive to create a 'stay safe' philosophy across all aspects of the school. Schools now have their safeguarding arrangements stringently checked by Ofsted when they come to carry out an inspection.

Describe two ways in which pupils can be encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety

One of the changes we have introduced is asking visitors to the school to complete a screening document that reinforces the message that safe guarding is at the top of our agenda. At the last meeting of the governing body the governors agreed an initiative to extend the use of this document for all parents as well during the discussion parent governors particularly felt that all parents would be happy to see this introduced. Therefore after half term when you come to school we will ask you to complete the screening document. (Miller, 2008, 24)

Explain the importance of different health and safety policies relevant to a teaching and learning environment

This only needs to be completed once and is then kept on file. The governors want to reinforce our safeguarding message across the whole school community and to evidence our commitment to keeping pupils safe.
