Training and Development

ABSTRACT

Training and development is of rising importance to organizations for achieving gain among their competitors as improved productivity has become the need of every organization. There is a considerable debate about the affects of training on both the employee and the goals of organization. The debate is between the two schools of thoughts in which one argues that the training results in increased turnover while the other argues that it leads to an increased retention level of employees. This research paper will analyze the facts about the importance of the training and development to both the employees and the organization.

Employee Training and Development

Introduction

For any organization the most valuable assets are human resources, without the man power nothing can be done. According to Ebert Hubbard “One machine can do the work of 50 ordinary men, but no machine can do the work of one extraordinary man” (Goldstein, 1989).Training and development are considered as the basis for the human resource management. Training refers to the activities that are designed with the aim of refining knowledge and expertise that are required for specific types of work whereas development is the growth of an individual's ability through unconscious or conscious learning. Training and development of an employee is a vocation activity that makes a substantial contribution to the profitability and efficiency of an organization.

Purpose of Training and Development Programs

Training should be tied to the organizations strategic business plan (redden et.al, 1989).The purpose of training and development programs is to develop employee and organizational aptitudes. Different types of trainings and different types of experiences of development are required by the employees at various stages of their careers. The degree might groom students for their initial job but as they steps forward their career they will need to attain knowledge and assistance through experience. When an organization will invest in enhancing the skills and knowledge of the employees, this investment will be returned in the form of effective and productive employees. Training is of great importance to organization. Training programs have been directly related to employee satisfaction (McNamara, 2004)

High Cost of Training and Development of an Employee

Training should be looked as contribution rather than nuisance than (brown, 2002). In 2004, it was found by the American society of training and development that annual training average cost per employee increases to $955 and it was an increase of $135/employee from previous year (Astd, 2005).
