Thesis Statement

This paper, will mainly be discussing one of the battles happened in U.S Civil War. The battle I have chosen for this paper is the Battle of Shiloh. Battle of Shiloh, also known in the historiography of the Civil War as Pittsburg landing one of the battles of the Civil War, which took place between April 6 and 7 April 1862, the city of Shiloh in the state of Tennessee, 30 kilometers north of the city of Corinth in the state Mississippi.

After the loss of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, Confederate Army General Albert Sidney Johnston, had to withdraw, giving the Union forces a large part of Kentucky and Tennessee. The retreat of the Confederates was a nice surprise for Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of Tennessee, numbering 40,000 soldiers (Hughes Jr., website).

After several weeks of preparation, Grant continued his offensive, moving along the Tennessee River toward Pittsburgh Landing. There he was ordered to wait for reinforcements in the form of Ohio Army Gen. Don Carlos Buell numbering 20 000 soldiers. Grant did not expect the presence of Confederate forces in the area and not built field fortifications around their camp. Not appreciating the danger, inexperienced Grant's army took up exercise drills.

During this time the Confederates not wasting time. Johnson chose the large railway junction Corinth, Mississippi as a starting point counteroffensive against the Army of Tennessee. The Confederates would quickly destroy the forces of Grant and connected to prevent his army from the Army, Ohio. Initially, he wanted to attack Johnston on April 4, but caused a shift delay the attack on April 6. Confederate attack was a surprise for the Army of Tennessee and some of its troops fled in panic.

Background of Battle

The Battle of Shiloh was the largest battle in the west stage of the American Civil War, carried out between 6 and 7 April, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. The forces of the Confederate States, under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnston and PGT Beauregard launched a surprise attack against the Union Army led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant, being close to defeat (Winik, 36).
