Ice hockey is the national sport of Canada and is his greatest contribution to the world of sport. Main interest of young Canadian boys for nearly 100 years, ice hockey is now seriously practiced by men and women in 20 countries. In Canada people play is as their life lies with this game. The importance of the game can be seen with the excitement that is developed when Canadian team plays with some other team (Filler, 2011).

History of the Stanley Cup

Ice hockey holds a great importance for the people of Canada. Canadian take this game very seriously it considers it part of their cultural games. Talking about the history of Stanley cup, the Cup has been awarded every year since 1893 except 1919 and 2005. In 1919, the epidemic of Spanish flu forced the cancellation of the final between the Montreal Canadians and Seattle. The series was equal to two wins and a draw when both sides came to the death of Joe Hall of Canadians following this disease that affects several other players. In 2005, the lockout hit the NHL, which canceled the 2004-2005 NHL seasons. The National League would adopt the format four-of-seven for the final of 1939.
