Whistle blowing In the Nursing Profession

Introduction

Whistle blowing means to disclose information or act in for the welfare of the public. The employee currently working in the organization or a former employee may disclose the information. This information or act disclosed can be about the illegal act, unethical means of operation, misconduct or any illegitimate practice by the employees and report it to the person who has the authority to take action against it.

In case of health care service, a nurse or a midwives can disclose the act in a situation where they see any illegitimate, unethical or illegal practice-taking place, and there does not exist any internal mechanism to address the problem or incase where no measures are taken to the complaint. In health care service, the unethical, illegitimate or illegal practice can be any practice that jeopardizes the life of a patient, unsafe practice, negligence it can also be employees. The wastage of drugs or any resources, misrepresentation, misinterpretation, dishonestly and breach of State legislation or Commonwealth is part of an illegal act or immoral act of the organization.

Whistle blowing is a considered legitimate action where a democracy prevails in a society. The issue of disclosure arises when whistle blower and the culprit are associated with each other, where protecting the whistle-blower is a major concern and get difficult. In some cases, the issues arise where the whistle blower is blamed for the problem, a complaint is a file against the whistle blower, or become a victim of harassment, assault or a legal action is a file against the whistle blower (http://www.nswnurses.asn.au).

Where there has been the development in the health and care sector, there too is a need to come forward and act as a leader in proper guidance. Nursing staff or nurses should set an example by developing themselves and other to persuade the changes in of care given to individuals keeping in mind the need of an individual. A nurse should develop a workplace culture by leadership that results best in the welfare of the patients An organization needs to focus on means by which, they can incessantly deliver excellence care, innovative means to nurture and improve its productivity.
