Wind Belt Technology

Introduction

Wind belt is a device for converting wind power to electricity. The Wind belt was devised as a wind power generator to meet the very modest power needs of families in third-world countries. The device is revolutionary for being non revolving. Most wind power is produced by something going around in a circle and turning on an axis to drive a generator. Wind belt, however, uses the oscillation of a thin strip of material held in tension with a spring to vibrate a magnet that generates electrical power.

For urban installations, wind belts offer advantages that might make them particularly appealing. With no dangerously fast moving parts, wind belts offer a method for generating energy without endangering bats and birds. Wind belts may also be better suited to the variable, gusty winds of an urban setting where rotating generators are less effective.

The inventor of the Wind belt, Shawn Frayne, was a winner of the award's 2007 breakthrough publishers of the magazine.

Discussion

Wind belt is an innovative generator of electricity from wind power. The device is designed to supply electricity to households in developing countries. Unlike conventional wind turbines, Wind belt uses the oscillation of a thin strip to vibrate a magnet that generates electricity. Technology invented in 2007 has begun to be sold by the company recently Humdinger, in three different models depending on the scale of use.

The advantages of the invention are the ability to work at low speeds of wind, the lower cost solar panels and, having no moving parts, the least effect on birds and bats.

A famous example of the aero elasticity is the original fall of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which became known as Galloping Gertie and is commonly shown to engineering, architecture, and students of physics as a cautionary tale.

Prototypes of the device is claimed to be ten to thirty times more efficient at that wind micro turbines, even when more than 100% efficiency is not physically possible. A prototype has successfully operated two LEDs, a radio and a clock using the wind generated from a fan in the house. The cost of materials was well below U.S. $ 10, giving a cost of 10s of dollars per watt.

This system generates energy from vibrations. These are created when wind, however small, just blow on the stretched membrane, connected to a magnet. The system requires Wind belt still enough wind (6 m / s) for optimum production. According to its creator, it is ideal for an urban environment unlike generators and wind blades that require space.

The Wind belt is not a new invention: it was named by Popular Mechanics in 2007 for Breakthrough Awards. Frayne was inspired to set up a start-up based on this technology (Humdinger Wind Energy LLC).

It expects three kinds of sizes for a demonstration later this year. The micro Wind belt consists of an autonomous unit of 12x2 cm. It generates enough energy to sensors or small electronic ...
