Article: Chlan, Linda and Savik, Kay. (2011). Patterns of Anxiety in Critically Ill Patients

Receiving Mechanical Ventilatory Support, Nursing Research May/June 2011, Vol 60, No 3S, S50-S57

Identify the major design group and specific design used by the study. For example, “quasi-experimental: One group pretest-post test design.”

The research design of the article is descriptive, which effectively fulfils the purpose of the study, which is to describe anxiety ratings for a subgroup of mechanically ventilated patients over the duration of enrollment in a multisite clinical trial. The experiment design is randomized controlled trial to assess the interventions on anxiety.

Highlight or circle an independent variable.

The independent variables on the basis of which, the dependent variable is studied are sedative exposure, dose frequency, sedation intensity, severity of illness and time.

Highlight or circle a dependent variable.

The dependent variable is anxiety, which is measured and rated for the participants.

Highlight or circle an intervening variable that the authors considered in their study design and/or analysis.

No intervening variable is noted, however, I think dose frequency can be an intervening variable because it can intervene in the result by the change in the frequency of the dose.

Highlight the description of the sample.

In this sample (n = 57), participants had been in the ICU for a median of 8 days (range = 1Y29 days) and had been receiving mechanical ventilatory support for a median of 6 days (range = 1Y27 days) prior to enrollment. Participants randomized to the usual care group remained enrolled in the study for a median of 4.1 days (range = 1Y30 days).

Identify the sample strategy and specific technique. For example, “ non-probability convenience.”

The sample strategy used in this research is probability sampling.

Highlight how many groups were in the study and how many subjects were in each ...
