Introduction

AT & T Southwest is a company of telecommunications American, based in San Antonio (Texas), and part of the holding company AT & T. Pay phone outside the offices of AT & T in San Antonio, Texas. The company was known the largest operating unit of the 22 companies that made ??up the Bell System, which provided services for local telephone in much of the United States.

Discussion

The Bell System, owned by AT & T, enjoyed the monopoly in telephone service until January 8, 1982, when it settled a lawsuit against this practice by the Department of Justice of the United States. The latter found that AT & T would be separated from its local operating service companies. Thus, the January 1, 1984 the Bell System companies were separated into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies, independent of each other, known as "Baby Bells".

After the breakup of AT & T in 1984, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company was managed by Southwestern Bell Corporation, which ironically was the smallest of the seven Regional Bell Operating Companies. Despite the similarity in name, both companies were different. The name problem was resolved in 1995 when Southwestern Bell Corporation changed its name to SBC Communications Inc., permitting it to expand its coverage to other areas of the country.

After acquiring Pacific Telesis Group in 1997, Southern New England Telecommunications in 1998 and Ameritech in 1999, SBC Communications Inc. decided to associate its corporate name to their companies. Thus, a series of changes in trademarks was in 2002, SBC was the generic name for all group companies. However, this change did not affect Southwestern Bell Telephone Company until 2003, when the latter became a holding company that brought together five other companies of local telephony in the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma ...
