Selected Organization Overview

Toyota Motor Corporation is Japan's largest automaker and the top automaker operating in the US market. Up until 2010, Toyota gained market share in the US during every year since 1999. In 2010, Toyota's peerless brand reputation for vehicle reliability and safety was tarnished by an enormous recall, affecting about 8 million vehicles, related to unintended acceleration in several of its Toyota and Lexus vehicles (Ibis World, 2012c). The cause of the vehicles' unintended acceleration is not perfectly clear (though driver error seems most likely), but investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed unsavoury discussion of the problems by Toyota executives before the issue garnered national attention. The scandal gave credence to the claim that Toyota was systematically ignoring certain rare vehicle complaints that could have interrupted the company's goal of increased market share in the world (Ibis World, 2012a).
