Abstract

There is a long history of people facing unfair treatment by the state, authorities, governments etc. Fundamental rights of the people have been violated at various points in the past. Even today, we see basic rights of people being violated in different parts of the world. To safeguard the rights of a common man, different laws have been introduced and legislated from time to time in history. In this paper, we will try to analyze the famous civil rights movement in the US, which brought about a revolution in the way rights of the African Americans are being safeguarded now. We will try to look into major events which took place during the movement and the everlasting impact which has been left by those events. There were civil rights movement throughout the world in the past as well in other parts of the world, but the biggest and the most important movement we believe was the one started in the US. We will discuss the events which happened during the US civil rights movements and how they have affected the society of US and the world as a whole.

History

Although different civil rights movements were started in the 20th century, the biggest and the most important one are regarded to be the one which started in the US (Chong, 1991). There has been a long history of black slavery in the US by the whites. Blacks were racially abused by the whites who immigrated to the Northern America. Blacks were frequently being abused and oppressed and there were no concrete laws present back then to protect and safeguard their interests. In the first few decades of the twentieth century, blacks in many parts of the US were not even allowed to mix up freely with the whites. There were restrictions imposed on the black people regarding their movement and social gathering with the whites. Due to these restrictions and lack of rights, blacks even faced numerous problems in securing jobs both in the private and public sector. Not just that, but blacks did not even have proper access to schools and colleges. Their academic literacy was compromised that resulted in blacks facing more problems due to their inability to compete with the educated whites. Whites were the dominant force back then, controlling and often exploiting the fundamental rights of the blacks. Other problems for the black include their inability to access legal ways to prosecute whites for the injustice being committed against them due to pre-dominant pro-white judiciary. Due to these problems, various groups came into existence in an attempt to uplift the status of blacks in the society and fight against the racist system. Groups such as National Association for the Advancement of Colored People were formed in 1909 (NAACP, 2013). These groups tried to work in their own capacities but little immediate impact was felt due to their lack of support from the ruling elite classes.
