Birth and family background

Date of birth: June 15, 1954.

Paul Rusesabagina was born to parents of different origins in Murama, Rwanda. His father was a Hutu, while his mother was Tutsi. His family was quite large and he was one of the nine siblings. Even though it was not unusual to have different families marrying each other, this family did not regard or take into account their personal differences. According to their culture, Paul was given a surname different from his father. His surname was Rusesabagina. His mother language is Kinyarwanda. However, he preferred to choose the name Paul when he was baptized in 1967. This was in line with the local cultural tradition. Initially he wanted to become a minister.

Early life and education

Rusesabagina attended primary and secondary school in Gitwe. He learned to speak English by the age of 13.. Rusesabagina's family and early life incidents made him to learn to be kind and sympathetic to people, especially to refugees. As a child he learnt to protect refugees from his family. This happened during the 1950s and the 1960s when his family would be providing refuge to the refugees fleeing the fighting as a result of the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi.

Marriage

He married the daughter of a pastor named Esther on September 8, 1967. He currently has three children who live with him; Diane, Roger, and Lys. . He has also adopted two nieces whom he adopted after their parents were killed. He is currently married to Taciana with whom he has one child. She is his second wife.

Profession

He wants to become a minister and went to theology school. He later adopted the profession of Hotel Management and went to Switzerland for education in hotel management where he studied bookkeeping, payroll management, cuisine and other skills. After graduation he became the general manager of diplomats' hotel where he served till 1994.

Travel to Europe and break up with first wife

Paul due to his work and travel to Europe was unable to keep in touch with his wife for a long time. As a result they separated in 1981. Paul won the custody of his three children who continued to stay with him. In 1987, he met a nurse named Tatiana. Paul did not care for the fact that she was a Tutsi and helped her escaped the bias attitude in the workplace by obtaining a transfer for her to the central hospital in Kigali. After two years, he married Tatiana who then adopted her three children. They went on to have a child of their own named Tresor.

Role in helping refugees during the Rwandan Genocide

During the 100-day genocide, Paul managed both the hotels as its Belgian owners had fled abroad leaving Paul in charge. As the war between the two ethnic groups, the Tutsis and the Hutus raged across, the UN officials were also being attacked. This prompted the UN to withdraw.
