Abstract

The study focuses on the concept of crime in relation to the death penalty. The main purpose of the study is to know that whether the crime rate is affected or decreased by the punishment that is the death penalty. The research study also explores various facets of death penalty and crime and tries to determine its consequence on the prevention of crime from the society. Finally the study depicts a range of aspects which are responsible for death penalty and crime and tries to portray the overall effect of deterrence of crime on the death penalty.

Introduction

The research study is related to the death penalty and prevention of crime. The death penalty or execution is to cause death of a convicted by the State as punishment for a crime established in the legislation, the crimes for which this penalty is applied frequently termed capital offenses. Therefore, this study will focus on the death penalty and deterrence to crime in the society.

In a study that is “the changing nature of death penalty debates” by the Radelet and Borg in 2000, focused on the death penalty and deterrence. The study examines the changing nature of death penalty arguments which involve six variables that are deterrence, incapacitation, caprice and bias, cost, innocence and retribution. The results of the study showed that the recent changes in public opinion regarding the death penalty. The analysis reflected that the social science scholarship is shifting the way of the Americans debate about the death penalty. Particularly when viewed within a historical and world - wide context, these alteration put forward a gradual faction toward the eventual eradication of the capital punishment in the America.

Another study that is “Why do white Americans support the death penalty” by the Joe, Laura and Alan reflects the individual level and contextual factors, paying the particular attention to how racial attitudes and racial composition influence white support for the capital punishment. The study includes the variables that are social and governmental trust and the individualist and authoritarian values. Another study that is “applying the death penalty to crimes of genocide” by the Jens David Ohlin, the study was based on the qualitative data that secondary data. The results of the study showed that the there were isolated calls for the leniency and clemency, and even companies of victors' justice, but certainly no suggestions that executions violated international law.
