Different Cultural Groups in the United States

Introduction

The paper will present the discussion on our perceptions of some specific groups living in United States; such as African Americans, Native Americans, Latino (a), and Immigrants.

African Americans

African Americans are the American people whose origin is from sub-Saharan Africa. The perception of these people is that they are blacks and they have been complaining of the discrimination and prejudice they are facing since many years. However, they have been fitted in the suppression of slavery system, and they have learnt to live life with all this discrimination and injustice.

The traits and characteristics of the people of this group are that they are generally misjudged by the people as being the wrong person in the very first meeting. However, it is not necessary and they might turn out to be a good person later. As far as working with them is concerned, it can be said that they can be nice friends and can be a good and helpful colleague. On the other hand, one should avoid making fun of them at the workplace or talking offensively in front of them. Therefore, we always try to learn new cultures so that we may know how to deal with people of different backgrounds (John, 2001).

In a broad sense, all black citizens of the U.S. determine their respective race. However, as a rule, the term 'African American' refers to people from Africa (the descendants of slaves and old workers), for a number of generations living in the United States. They have different culture and background than whites of the country. Advanced research also shows that these people have been mistreated and misjudged by the native people of America since their arrival in the country.
