Digital Literacy and its Importance for School Going Children

Introduction

Digital literacy has resulted in the increase in information which can be accessed quickly and conveniently and has also facilitated the sharing and collaboration of knowledge. There has been an increase in relying on the digital modes of communication. The standard of writing has now been changed to word processing and there has been an increase in the use of email and internet. This has led to the potential in global access of knowledge and in the creation of environments consisting of different languages due to intercultural and global exchange. The use of computer has become a part of education and business culture because it directly affects the economy of country. In order to have proper access to knowledge, a person needs to be digitally literate. When the learners and the students are not be prepared to be digitally literate, they will not be able to perform properly in their professional and personal lives (Gilster, n.d.).

In this assignment, I will reflect my experience in using online resources to illustrate issues that technology provides. In addition to this, various aspects which will also be considered regarding the use of digital literacy in education process will be provided on the basis of the findings of a case study. Technology tools in classrooms have provided interesting ways for pupils to connect and share (Palloff, 2001). In this reflection, there will be some clarification of definitions and understandings of digital literacy which will be followed by a discussion about the issues and difficulties with digital education, including contemporary theories that aim for successful educational outcomes through technology integration. After that, I am going to refer to my personal experience stating complications that I have faced, and benefits I have gained through e-learning. This assignment will also seek to argue for a need to implement an eLearning strategy in our school that will develop digital literacies in pupils and make them better prepared for life outside and beyond education and the reason for its importance.
