Web-based compensation tool versus a client-server based PC-based system

A thick client or standalone system denotes an application that runs on a desktop setting like the platforms of Mac or Windows. In this system, the norm was that the running of code together with the data processing took place on the client. However as the internet spread, the thin client systems gained popularity. The popularity of the thin client was also for the reason that the standalone applications started becoming much more complicated and dependent on the controls of the third party. Like everything, standalone systems also have some drawbacks. Amongst the most prominent is the one that is associated to its deployment. In the event that a large number of standalone systems require being updated, the task is not at all easy (Stiffler, 2011). One more issue with the standalone systems is the dependency on the platform.

A standalone system necessitates a local environment of runtime. For instance, a Windows Form application would run only on the platform of Windows having the .Net framework installed. These negative aspects are balanced by the capability of working offline. It is practicable that the application runs offline however it may work with the local data only because of the absence of connection to the internet. Since the entire working out in performed on the computer on which the application runs, the amount of information delivered via the internet is diminished. The data is retrieved by the client from the source of data, after which the client carries out some calculation on it and later it is sent back to the server.

On the other hand, when the web based application is talked about, data is delivered again and again amid the server and the client every time there is a need for performing a new computation. In case a number of clients are attached to the server simultaneously, this results in huge amount of processing on the server without utilizing the client power. A single common user interface for all the various applications and the hyperlinks are the two very significant concepts that are introduced by the World Wide Web. For the order of running the resources as in the executable programs of common gateway interface (CGI) was introduced. This permitted a web browser to implement the resources on a web server.

Having this incorporated, the program developers were capable of accomplishing standard functionality of data processing like the access to databases and they were also capable of distributing it all over the globe. As the creation of dynamic web pages developed, a software program with the name “application server” evolved. In the web based compensation tool, when a request is received by the web server for a dynamic page, this page is forwarded to the application server. The code is read by the application server and then the page is finished in accordance with the specifications of the code. For the reason that the data is requested by the web browser from a server which after ...
