CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Overview

At the moment, there are thousands of organizations established in the word. Some of these organizations operate at small levels and do not usually cross the borders of their countries but on the other hand, there are multinational organizations and conglomerates that have their roots buried deep in almost every continent of the world. Such organizations understand that every country and every continent is different from the other and has its own set of characteristics. Every country in this world has its own set of cultures, languages, norms, ethics and values. For a business that seeks to flourish in multiple countries, it is important to understand the characteristics of each country and then blend accordingly. The best example of such a blend is McDonalds. When the fast food giant decided to enter the Indian market, it had to revise everything from its outlook to its menu and ingredients to be able to blend with the country and to get accepted by the people. Since such decisions of a company are usually made by the top management and the company leaders, it is important for these leaders to possess the proper understanding of diversity and cross-country differences. If the leaders and managers of a business understand the need to blend with the local characteristics, it could lead to high prosperity for the organization. Global management encompasses all such activities and strategies that a manager has to consider and implement in order to become an efficient leader and a great manager. When organizations go global, their operations are divided into several departments and units. All of these units work independently to fulfil their individual tasks and cohesively to contribute towards the organizational goals and objectives. It is believed that diversified teams lead to higher value creation and greater organizational efficiency. The proposed studies, suggests and discusses various elements of team building, global management, leadership and diversity in an organization and then studies their relationship to each other and their impact on each other in an organization. Furthermore, this study discusses how these factors may influence and effect decision making and organizational strategies.

Background

It is believed that global organizations will be increasingly important players in the 21st century and beyond (Bartlett &Ghoshal, 1998). As firms form strategic alliances and joint ventures with overseas partners, suppliers, and distributors, they cannot afford to neglect global leadership development and the characteristics of countries they operate in. One of the consequences of globalization is that organizations need leaders who have a global perspective and an ability to integrate different points of views in pursuit of diversity, world-wide production, global marketing, and global value delivery systems (Jeannet, ...
