Introduction

Infant mortality rate (also sometimes called the infant mortality rate, although this is not entirely accurate) - deaths of children under one year, one of the basic statistics of demography that make mortality population. Infant mortality is an important characteristic of the general state of health and living standards of the country, region, city, minority, etc. From the middle of the twentieth century is almost invariably used as one of the important factors in the classification of countries according to the standard of living of the population. Like other demographic indicators, infant mortality can be expressed both in absolute and in relative terms. Relative index or infant mortality is usually expressed in per mille (‰) and is the number of children dying before the age of 1 year per 1,000 live births per year, far less commonly used ratios based on 100 or 10 000 newborns. Infant mortality is often isolated from infant mortality, since its causes can vary significantly (Ramstrom ,Nettesheim, 2007).

Location/Geography

Africa, third largest continent on Earth, with adjacent islands, it covers an area of ??approximately 30,243,910 km ², about 20% of the total landmass. Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east, is separated from Europe and Asia through the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the northeast. In the late nineteenth century saw the partition of Africa, the determining factor in economic and social developments on the continent over the past century (Haines 2010).

The Republic of Zambia is a country (752,614 km ², 11,668,000 inhabitants in 2005) of ' Africa Central and South America. It is bordered to the north by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north-east by Tanzania, on the east by Malawi, on the south by Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, and to the west with the ' Angola that has no access to the sea. Zambia is a presidential republic within the Commonwealth, a member of the United Nations and of the ' African Union and associated to ' European Union. The official language is English (Grason, 2002).

Population

African population in 2010 was 955,006,740 people. At the last census 2010 the Zambia's total population stood at 9,885,591 people, estimated in July 2006 gives a population of 11,502,010 people. The estimates take into account the effects of high mortality due to AIDS, resulting in lowering of life expectancy, higher infant mortality, lower rates of population growth and changes in the population structure by age.
