Introduction

In order to study innovation and creativity, a case study of Wales Tourism Development (WTD) is presented. It is an organization formed seven year ago to promote tourism in the capital city, Cardiff. The current situation of innovation and creativity in the organization is not very encouraging. Generally, the senior managers in any organizations control material rewards, punishment, appraisals and organizational culture.

On the contrary, the senior managers in WTD do not meet the standards of competent leaders and cannot develop a strong organizational culture in that can ensure employees' better productivity, performance, teamwork, and strong decision making. It must be noted here that leaders' image shape the employees' behaviour, performance, motivation, and innovation in the company's culture. In addition, leaders can also influence employees' energy and health level by developing conducive and stimulating work environment, or environment filled with tension and fear can demotivated the employees.

The WTD is very much contributing in the promotion of tourism in the area but has been receiving criticism in many of its operations mainly due to the high lack of innovation and mismanagement. Moreover, the in-house ill-treatment with the employees, like increased workloads and pay cuts has also been criticized. The effect is employees' high rate of turn over, lack of trust among the department, back stabbing at lower and high level of management, and misuse of the resources.

Innovation is achieved when the creativity is successfully implemented within an organization. In this regard, individuals and teams are the starting players of creativity and innovation in the organization. It is a necessary but not a strict requirement that both the players must be active. However, successful innovation depends on so many other factors, as well. It can stem within (Incremental theory of innovation) and outside (Radical theory of innovation) the organization ( as technology has become an important tool in the process of innovation.

The company's chief executive officer, David Marshal, also has been charged with the arrogance and using obnoxious remarks for the employees and for the people of media for publishing some reports of the company that lowered the status of the company publically. . His rasping management styles, non-professional attitudes with market competitors and irrational steps taken for the cost and accounts management are some of the reasons that prove him incompetent according to latest theories of leadership and innovation in the business administration.

In the light of all the controversies the company is facing, one can conclude that the company is in the dire need of innovation and creativity and must review its major operations in the framework of current principles and practices of the management. With reference to the management and leadership styles practiced by WTD, the staff is showing not the desired productivity and performance.
