Learning of Language without Culture

Literature Review

There are many books and articles which have shown the interrelationship between language and culture. Some studies clearly state that people cannot learn any of these things without other. This paper will give an extensive description about the need of incorporating culture with language. Due to global economies, international trade and business expansion as lead many people to learn different languages. One of the basic problems which are faced by most of the people is that it is difficult for them to overcome their ethnocentric thinking. Ethnocentric means that a person thinks that the way of doing things in their culture is best and efficient. Almost all cultures have an ethnocentric thinker who thinks like this (Schmidt-Rinehart 1997, 201).

Culture as a Part of Learning

Learning a language is not only limited to learning vocabulary and grammar rules. Language express thoughts whether it is in written form, oral or in the form of symbols. Many scholars agree that these factors are very important to learn a language. According to the study of Brown (1991) second language learning also means learning of another culture. It can be said that a language cannot be learned until the cultural underpinnings have been learned. According to Brook (1964) teaching a language without giving knowledge about culture at the same time means teaching unimportant things. A person can learn symbols and words but without knowing the culture would not be able to use them in a proper situation. Without understanding a culture one cannot understand the meaning and use of the words and symbols. There are many chances that a person can attach wrong meaning to those words, so it is very necessary that warnings must be given to them. In other words, a person would not be able to build a relationship of those words with a particular structure (Brook 1964, p. 32).

It has been observed that language cannot be learned successfully without learning the components of culture. It is also recommended that those who want to learn language should also learn the culture. It is also for teachers who teach language. Teachers should not only need to be expert in teaching language they must know that how the language is utilize in the culture. According to various studies it has been found that teachers who typically teach languages do not teach the cultural aspects which are very important for learners in order to learn language successfully (Brown 1991, p. 32). The studies of Schmidt-Rinehart (1997) states that hose learners are mostly successful who learn a language within a broader scope of instructions. According to the new standards of learning language it is suggested that learners should learn a language in a learning environment. Learning environment contains five main areas which are culture, ...
