In the late 60's was installed the first computer system in hospitals in developed countries. These systems were funded primarily to process orders, charge sheets and billing accounts. Gradually it developed technology going from the basement of the hospital to the nursing units. So computers, PDAs, cell IPad and today, but slowly began to replace paper securely over the last 50 years. During this period the nurses / I have contributed to the acquisition, design and implementation of these technologies. Beginning in the 80s and due to technological development reached a new discipline, nursing informatics. According Hovenga, the early work in this area was published by Ball & Hannah, 1984; Grobe, 1988; Hannah, 1985.The nurses that began at that time were the pioneers in the discipline and often unconsciously began as they were involved with the technology or were curious start in new fields of knowledge. 

Nursing Informatics

It is the discipline which connects nursing, computer technology and science. Although the literature on the subject can be found numerous definitions, rules and differences exist, which probably correspond to the historical social and technological context in which they were written, reflecting the growth in perspective, however, a detail relevant in this movement and progress of the definition, is the change of focus in the computer and technology, to an approach where the focus is the person in the collection, processing and management of information to create knowledge. As indicated Thede and Sewell, the definition of nursing informatics has evolved reflecting common areas, as seen in the following definitions.

Nursing Informatics (IE) facilitates the integration of data, information and knowledge to support patients, nurses and other health care providers in their decision-making in all roles and environments. This support is accomplished through the use of structures, processes and information technology (IT). “Finally, in 2008, the ANA defined it as "a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science and management information and communication of data, information, knowledge and knowledge in nursing practice”.
