Introduction

The Tarmac Company is an organisation having three major areas of business, which are Tarmac Quarry Materials, Tarmac Building Products and International. The company has an obvious strategic structure. It concentrates on five goals. The company uses the word 'DREAM' to help its employees in remembering and focusing on these five goals which are mentioned below:

Develop markets

Reduce costs

Engage employees in teamwork

Act responsibly

Manage company's assets.

For administering this strategy, the company requires the people who are right for the place having the appropriate skills. The Tarmac Quarry Materials have the highest value for communities, customers, investors and employees.

Organisational Structure Roles and Functions

All of the companies in the world have some purpose for their existence and this can be shown in the form of a mission statement. The mission statement of Tarmac is: 'To be the first choice for building materials and services that meet the essential needs for the development of the world in which we live.' From this, we know that the company wants to be the first name which comes in the mind of a customer whenever he thinks of considering building materials.

The products of the company are essential for building. The company also behaves responsibly in terms of sustainability towards the community and economy (Ritchie 1999, 90).

The attainment of organisational objectives remains the cornerstone of any company's strategies and policies. Let us first discuss the objectives of Tarmac and see if it had been successful in achieving it. Each of Tarmac's strategic business operations suggest that it had been successful in creating synergies through the attainment of its aims and objectives. The company's objectives and aims and integrated in the company so well that they complement each other. For example; the business will not have any customers if the business is not operating well. Share holders will not invest money in the business, if the business hasn't got any customers. The company will not be able to afford to have any employees working for them if they have not got money being invested in the business (Caldwell 2004, 969). There are three key objectives of the company which are given below:

1.Empower the customer with control, choice and flexibility, including communications from anywhere to any device

2.Offer exciting new services for customers faster than before

3.Reduce operational costs - expected to amount to £1 billion per annum

The company has developed a higher repute for its operations and caters to a variety of customers and users with the same commitment. The operational costs of the company are gradually decreasing so that the company can have low break-evens while its profits remain high.

The Operations Function

The company produces a variety of materials used in construction, including aggregates, lime, and asphalt for roads, cement, limestone and ready-mix concrete. Tarmac also provides general contracting services for projects including highway maintenance, civil engineering and traffic management.
