Introduction

There are many theories of leadership that makes attempt to summarize what develops a successful leaders and how to recognize people who will be capable to direct a company or a team efficiently (May, 2000). Among these theories, one of the main theories is Skill-based theory that recommends that good leaders must possess set of skills, which develop with the passage of time (Burkus, 2010). This forms the background of the chosen Case study 3.1: A Strained Research Team. This part of the paper will present the case analysis and answer the questions related to the case study.

Case 3.1- A Strained Research Team (Skills Theory)

From the case study, it has been observed that Dr. Wood does not possess abilities to deal with team effectively; this may distress his team and may direct to project failure. Based upon the fact, it can be noticed that Dr. Wood has admirable technological abilities and theoretical talents but he has exposed that he possess no human abilities. Human encapsulate are very significant to make members work in a group, be encouraged and attain objectives mutually. Dr. Wood's conduct with his contemporaries will make them less encouraged and will make them function less as he has moved his dissatisfaction to his team fellows by stating in the presence of them that he apologizes to start the project work. This behavior from a leader will discourage them to achieve their objectives and will make them to agree to the design that they will be unsuccessful in the long run. Dr. Wood does not have the human ability needed to be the leader of his research group that is why team members are aggravated, they endeavor and they do not get award or admiration or good remark on the big attempt they are undertaking. That is why the project will be closed to cease (Northhouse, 2006).

Assessing by the Skill Model of Leadership, the personal traits that Dr. Wood appears to have universal and crystallized cognition skill, but he does not have human skills to motive team members and encourage them. Lacking these skills, his position is more like a manager rather than a leader. The task appears to be a great success and team has needed skills to execute it properly, on the other hand, without proper motivational skill and personal attributes of the leader, it may cease over time and lay the burden of over cost that initially designed. In my opinion, Dr Wood headship and relation with the team members appear fair. But his discouraging remarks and off-putting approach will make members suffer failure. Project appears to show some potential, but I also consider that it would do better if the spirit of leader has positive attitude .
