"Peer Mentoring” in Construction

Introduction

The paper discusses the research conducted on the effectiveness of peer mentoring program in action research. The main focus of this research was to understand the importance of peer mentoring in the construction program. This research emphasized that peer mentoring is beneficial for the construction program; therefore, was imperative to adopt peer mentoring within the program in order to help the learners and instructors in various ways including communication, engagement and achievement.

Background: Peer Mentoring Course

The paper relies on the research findings and the metrology of a six week peer mentoring course. The course helped the mentors and students to discuss any issue that the have to deal with but, they do not want to disclose any learning difficulties and issues feeling embarrassed about their inabilities. The students may ask for advice on networking and share useful contact that they have made. The course aimed that the mentors might identify the specific areas where the students will like training. Based on this purpose, the research was carried out so that the tutor and peer responses about the effectiveness of peer mentoring program can be judged. In short, the learner found the activities beneficial in improving their learning and participation skills. The facilitator of support is the person with the most responsibility for the mentoring program. If properly organized, it will result in success and benefits for all involved. This research has been very helpful in order to understand the advantages of peer monitoring in construction teaching and discuss the ways through which peer monitoring can be applied in teaching construction program (Theresa, 1992, 95).

Research Purpose and Rationale

There were two reasons for conducting this research. Firstly, it is significant to improve learning in order to improve workplace practices. Second, once can advance knowledge and theory, that is, new ideas about how things can be done and why”. (McNiff & Whitehead 2011 p1). As a trainer, the research was important as the researcher observed in the training that peer monitoring is very beneficial for students of construction in learning things and getting knowledge. Peer mentoring can be a successful way of providing support for these students. Peer mentoring programs are often developed using senior students of construction to mentor incoming students, assisting them with a smooth transition to their new profession (Theresa, 1992, 95).

Research Questions

The research asked the following questions:

1. Do you think that peer mentoring is beneficial?

2. Do you think peer mentoring can help the construction students in learning?

3. Do you think peer mentoring can be helpful for the construction program teachers?

4. To gain an understanding of peer interaction
