Introduction

Personal protective equipment (PPE) affords the user protection from hazards encountered at work, at home or during leisure activities. In the professional context, they are instruments for achieving what the EU considers a fundamental right, that of health and safety in the workplace.

Definiton of Personal Protective Equipment

The term personal protective equipment refers to the specialized clothing and equipment which employees wear in order to protect themselves against the safety and helath hazards. The instrument of personal protective equipment helps in the protection of different body parts like, ears, head, feet, face and hands.

Who addresses the use of PPE?

The main addressers of the use of PPE is OSHA. According to OSHA, it is necessary for the organizations that they should use the PPE. As per the general requirement 1910.132(d)(1), it is very necessary for the employers that they should assess the workplace and determine the hazards in the workplace.

How Is Determined The Type Of PPE Needed To Be Used?

In order to determine the type of PPE needed to be used, it is necessary for the organizations that they should conduct proper evaluation of the hazards invoved within the organization. Organizations can determine the type of PPE needed to be used by completely making assessment on the hazards involeved in the organizations.

Purpose of PPE

European Union policy with regard to PPE is aimed to define the basic health and safety requirements to be fulfilled by manufacturers and remove barriers to trade in these products within the internal market. The presence of the CE marking on PPE is an indication that it meets these harmonized requirements and can be sold anywhere in the European Economic Area (made up of the EU countries plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) as well as in Turkey. This also applies to products manufactured in third countries.

Types of PPE

Personal protective equipments can be categorized into following types:

1) Hearing Protection

2) Head Protection

3) Ear Protection

4) foot Protection

Hearing Protection

Hearing protection is uised by those organizations in which there is a danger of noise at or above the Exposure Action level. In hearing protetcionthree types of hearing protections are used:

1) Earplugs

2) Semi-inserts

3) Earmuffs

Head protection

Head protection is used in the industrial safety halmets, industrial scalp protectors and caps/ hair nets. The main users of head protection are workers with bolt driving tools, construction workers, building repairers and workers with excavations and tunnels.

Eye protection

Eye protection is used to give protection to eyes. They are normally the safe glasses that help in giving protection from eye hazards.

Foot protection

These are the footwears used for the purpose of saving from construction, building, demolition, repair and manual handling.
