CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

This study focuses on applying the sequential mixed research method in order to collect the data and interpret the findings of the data. The sequential mixed research method is divided into two components or parts: 1) Firstly, this research focus on collecting the data based on qualitative research methodology from elite interviews with 3-5 principals that self-report they have cultivated effective, inclusive practices within their school. This questions from the quantitative in-depth interviews with principals surrounds around the five themes as discussed in the conceptual framework of effective inclusive practices of principals within the schools. 2) Secondly, the research moves in sequence towards second component of research methodology that is based on collecting the quantitative data. The second component consist of questionnaire that will survey the teachers experiences working with principals that have cultivated effective inclusive practices and their perceptions of the extent of how often those principal exhibited behaviors described in the qualitative interview in terms that principals believed they have cultivated effective inclusive practices within their schools. In order to achieve this objective, many previous research studies conducted in this manner such as of Waldron, McLeskey & Redd 2011) suggested to apply five point Likert Scale in the questionnaire.

3.2 Sequential Mixed Methods

Sequential mixed methods research is the commonly used research methodology where both qualitative and quantitative data is collected and analyzed in the sequential manner i.e. one follows the other or one is conducted based on the assumption answers of the second one. Mixed research methods are widely accepted in the literature of special education and principal leadership within school due to its philosophical assumptions and methods of inquiry. Through the philosophical assumptions, it entails the previous theoretical studies that provide the direction of collecting, gathering and analyzing the data. Philosophical assumptions in the literature of special education and principal leadership is found as mixture of both qualitative and quantitative approaches that are conducted in many sequences or phases in the research process. On the other hand, the method of sequential research methods is based on collecting, analyzing and mixing both qualitative and quantitative data from the primary sources in the single study or through the series of studies. The core idea of method is to apply both approaches qualitative and quantitative so that a better understanding approach of answering research problems or research questions could be achieved rather than based on any single approach among them.

Also researchers and scholars have conducted the research in area of special education within the inclusive schools and explored the role of principal effectiveness and teachers experiences working with those principals examined that, mixed research methods is the most profound method where both research ...
