The British Air ways was established at the time of initiation of civil aviation in UK and the days of World War I. On August 25, 1919, the company Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited (AT & T) established the first commercial flight daily between Paris and London. In 1924 Handley Page, were united under a single organization named as Imperial Airways Limited. From this union, the British commercial aviation was able to compete with other foreign companies. After ten years, Imperial Airways Limited established for the Pacific region, made a contract with Qantas Empire Airways Limited which made the organization to establish the linkage between Australia and United Kingdom.
The state airline
In 1935, because of the increasing competition, these small companies combined with one another to form an Aviation Company named as British Airways limited, which was operating from Gatwick Airport. After Four years, both companies, Imperial Airways and British Airways were nationalized by the British government. Hence a state airline came in to existence with name British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC).
After the Second World War, the expansion of BOAC reaches Europe, along with the rest of the world through its affiliation with new companies such as British South American Airways (BSAA), which came with its services to South America, in the year 1949. In Regards to the domestic flights in Europe, the company launched its new airline: British European Airways (BEA). The state airline expanded itself by adding new destinations, including New York (in 1946), Japan (1948), Chicago (in 1954) and the West Coast of the United States (in 1957). The development was also for domestic flights, with the arrival in the cities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast.
