Research Project: Impact of Windows 8 on the Businesses Worldwide

Research Question

Will Microsoft's new generation of Windows Operating System known as Windows 8 put any negative/positive impact on the Information Technology Industry?

Purposes of the Research

As we have seen, first Microsoft launched its new generation of operating system called Windows 8 for Tablets and Phones in October, and more recently, it launched windows 8 for PCs/Laptops which is one step ahead of its competitors, iOS and Android because it has proved to be a successful step towards integration of all the electronic business devices, mainly mobile phones, tablets and PCs/Laptops. Android for the time being is limited to Smart phones and Tablets while iOS has yet to secure enough users of its Mac OS for laptops and Macs to make a significant impact on the businesses worldwide. Introduction of common platform for all the business devices in the form of Windows 8 is surely something for Managers because integration of devices can potentially bring in more coordination between people and make decision making quicker and easier (FOSTER & GIBBONS, 2007, Pp. 122).

Potential Research Outcomes

Possible research outcomes could be “considerable impact” “huge impact” or “no major impact” of Windows 8 on the businesses worldwide. However, it must be noted that our research project will not be able to establish anything for sure as Windows 8 is a new phenomenon. Big Products like Windows 8 sometimes take some time to secure a beachhead in the market and then attack on a full scale to secure major share. Android wasn't an instant hit but over a period of time, it begun to give hard time to iPhone.

Rationale Choice of Windows 8

For Microsoft, it's about the future. Launch of windows 8 on 26 October 2012 has brought great expectations of business leaders around the world and expectations are high, both at the end of Microsoft as well as at the end of users. According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer “We have Windows re-invented”. Through this research project, we will try to gauge the impact of Windows 9 on the business through the expectation of IT professionals around the world, what they think about it and in their opinion, whether it is worthy to be used in their enterprises is worth. Opinions in this regard widely differs because some IT professionals are seeing it as a great business tool which will help them to get their businesses ahead while others are wondering if and why they need to have Windows 8 operating system on the screen (BERRY, 2000, Pp. 85).

Considerations of Ethical Issues

The traditional aim of scientific research - collecting reliable knowledge about the world - is, of course, a worthy goal in itself which involves a lot of ethics. Data on variables such as catch or effort are potentially subject to large errors due to poor estimates or intentional errors in the case of sensitive issues.
