Revolutionizing the Retail Sector

ABSTRACT

Digipos has tasked their engineers to think out of the usual. The engineers faced an issue to decrease the overall costs of ownership and at the same time be able to deliver a reliable as well as stable platform which would have the capability for a larger range of hospitality markets and retail. Digipos Systems provides the retailers the ability to have more grip over the transactions of point of sale by allowing them to modify only the part which was the source of the problem. Through a basic service design, the Quantum blade is able to reduce the downtime through utilizing only 60 seconds to the up gradation/ replacement along with no requirements to remove any peripherals. The Quantum Blade enhances the processor to the latest Intel Atom 330 processor technology. Quantum Blade is also built through the ultra-low-voltage (ULV) Intel Atom processor D510, the Retail Core generates minimal heat thereby eliminating the use of a fan for cooling. With future-proof technology in mind Digipos' goal is to continue to address the changing requirements for the retailer while providing a reduced total cost of ownership. Some companies have reported savings on maintenance contracts alone exceeding $20,000.00 per year. This is a phenomenal savings when considering the impact on the bottom line.

Outline

The paper evaluates the computing problems that were faced by Digipos in regards to their system upgrades and what solutions were used to resolve these problems. Furthermore an alternative solution was proposed that would be able to solve the problem. Comparison of retail blade system to Quantum blade was done based over the system performance and architecture. Methods were evaluated that would decrease the TCO along with recommendations if these methods would be effective or not.

Assessment of Main Computing Problems

Based over my opinion it can be said that Digipos has tasked their engineers to think out of the usual. The engineers faced an issue to decrease the overall costs of ownership and at the same time be able to deliver a reliable as well as stable platform which would have the capability for a larger range of hospitality markets and retail. Maximizing their customer's investment gave them the ability to maintain their competitive advantage; but in order to do that had to partner closely with a company that could provide a verifiable high performance embedded processor technology. Intel was the company and they have been using their processors exclusively for the past twelve years. Most retail systems prior to Digipos were done with systems designed with a PC format and had to be replaced every five to seven years. Upgrades and maintenance were downtime that could cost a company in lost revenue and damaged reputations. With Digipos's design retailers have the ability to diagnose the problems and resolved them quickly and efficiently.
