Self - The Concept

The Self-concept determines how individuals perceive themselves to themselves. This is a set of constructs that individuals adopt to relate to his person. It is a sense of self or descriptive and evaluative mental picture of the capabilities and features of each. It is a cognitive structure with emotional and behavioural consequences shades. It determines how we feel about ourselves and guides our actions (Markus & Nurius, 1987, 299-337). This concept is the basis of many different psychological studies and may take various settings. In general, we can say that self-concept is the cognitive structure that builds an individual about themselves, their strengths and limitations, and that will be the basis of the provision and the actions of an individual in various contexts. This drift leads to numerous different psychological concepts such as self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-awareness. Preserving a good self-esteem is essential in any psychotherapy, since it tends to establish itself as a symptom in recurrent distinct problems of conduct / behaviour. Therefore, psychologists define self-esteem as a function of the organism which allows the self-protection and personal development. Since, the lack of self-esteem affects health, social relationships and productivity.

The emphasis in different self or behavior leads to experiments phenomenological different. In Shame, the behavior is seen as a reflection of self, accompanied by increased physiological change (blush and increased heart rate), the people feel physically inferior, have a greater sense of isolation and believe others are angry with them. They are less inclined to admit what they did, feel more valued by others and focus more on your thoughts. Have the desire to hide and escape and feel exposed, even that does not involve a Shame physical audience, people imagine the reviews of others on the self and worry with this evaluation. Blame will be a less painful experience, it does not affect the identity of itself, and i.e. the self is not concerned (Doris, 2002). The relationship between cognitive styles and psychopathology is complex. Shame as an emotion devastating, leading to impairment of adaptive functions of the self: a) the tendency to Shame experience in various situations makes people more vulnerable to disturbance psychological disruptions due to repeated operation of the self b) secondly, a person predisposed to Shame is more vulnerable to feelings of lack of hope, which is considered one of the causes of depression, c) the recognition and experience psychological symptoms may put people at greater risk of feelings of Shame, because people feel shame of their own psychological symptoms, d) Shame and predisposition to various forms of psychopathology have probably common etiologies (Brown, 1993, pp. 27-58).
