Travel to Work

The study is based on the questionnaire that will find out the satisfaction level of the staff and encourage them to travel to work in a friendly environment manner. The aim of this survey was to determine how staff travel to work, how long the journeys take and how much they spend on public transport. The council is interested in the cost of public transport as it is considering either providing help with the cost of travel cards to encourage use of public transport or charging staff to park their cars at such a rate that public transport becomes more cost effective. All staff at the main council offices, situated in travel zone 2, was sent a questionnaire by email. Approximately 30% of staff responded that comprises 144 respondents (58 males and 86 female). Different statistical techniques were used to find out the best results that will help the council to encourage the staff members to travel to work. The questionnaire comprises of 5 questions that covers the type of transport they use to travel, time duration, cost, the department they work and their gender.

The overall results suggest that most of the staff of main council office uses public transport like Trains and Underground services for the traveling purposes, they prefer using public transport may be because of its cheap rates and less time consuming as they may find parking difficult. The time taken to travel to work is almost same for both genders and we have proved it through the analysis of variance. Whereas it can be said that the staff members who are using Train for traveling are paying much more than those who are using buses and underground services.

Using the results from Question 1, determine the numbers and percentages of staff, by gender, which use the different main forms of transport to get to work. Comment on these results and on any differences in the modes of transport chosen by gender. Illustrate your comments with a graph.

The table 1 that has been shown in the appendix represents the frequency of staff by gender that uses different forms of transportation. The results in that table suggests that most of the males and females prefer train and underground services, within gender approximately 25% and 20% of the male and female respectively prefer these services to travel to work. Whereas a very few of the male staff i.e. 3.4% of the total respondents uses motorcycle and no female was found to use motorcycle. Collectively it can be said that approximately 22% of the total staff uses train and underground services to travel to work.

The above graph also suggest that women feels more comfortable in walking to work than men, the reason behind this could be the gender ratio as there are more female respondents than men.

Using the results from Question 2, calculate the mean and standard deviation of the time taken to travel to work for males and females ...
