The use of nanotechnology in medicine, construction, and energy

Nanotechnologies promise benefits of all kinds, from medical applications to new or more efficient solutions to environmental problems and many others; however, to nanotechnology concept is still not well known in society. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter. To realize the potential of this technology is key to know that physical and chemical properties of matter change at the nanoscale, which is due to quantum effects. The electrical conductivity, heat resistance, flexibility, reactivity, among other properties, they behave differently on the same elements on a larger scale (Altmann, 2005).

The future of pharmaceuticals is one filled with improvement and expectations which is dependent solely on nanotechnology. The expectancy of medicine through the application of nanotechnology is high; this is also true for the pharmaceutical industry. This innovation is changing the way humans live but, it is wise to consider the negative impacts which it may have on the human anatomy. The human anatomy is one riddled with complexities and uncertainty. The body reacts to simple changes in the external and internal environment. Current medications prescribed by doctors have adverse and unwanted side effects. These side effects occur when the lymphatic system reacts to the invasion of the system by foreign bodies (medication).

This is one problem which the use of nanotechnology might pose. “Nanotechnology is a very good dream and humans should consider the effects before use”, this was the concern of one general practitioner. The concern is that the nanobots may start doing things they should not, activities like seeing a vein as an obstruction to blood flow, and this may result in the bots attacking the wrong element in the body. The other concern is just letting these nanobots loose in the body, without total control over them. There are many more concerns and negative impacts that nanotechnology may have, so before use consider seriously (Bennett-Woods, 2006).

The advances made in medicine through nanotechnology were once thought to be futuristic and hopeful but its reality. The implementation of the new inventions is yet to be made. We have been told of its benefits as with every new invention. So this leaves us to consider what the side effects are and will the human physiology accept these nanoscale, artificially intelligent, creations. Nanotechnology has created and, air of expectancy in the medical field, it also will impact the pharmaceutical industry but it may produce negative reactions in the human physiology. The involvement of nanotechnology in creating a truly artificial tissue or organ, that can take the place of one that is terminally diseased, such as an eye, ear, heart or joint has been envisaged. In the future, we could imagine a world where medical nanodevices are routinely implanted or even injected into the bloodstream to monitor wellness and to automatically participate in the repair of systems.
