Background to the Proposal

This proposal is based on the topic of the importance of training and development in corporate performance. In this study, the case of McDonald's will be analysed. The dissertation will explore the importance of training and development because of an increased demand for competitiveness in the current marketplace. In the rapidly changing global business environment, organisations need a competent and flexible work force in order to remain competitive (Noe, 2005). As a result, the demand for a competent and skilled workforce has become a strategic objective for several firms. The training and development systems of organisations play a critical role in ensuring that employees possess the key skills, attitudes, knowledge, and abilities required to achieve the overall goals of the organisation (Peteraf, 1993, pp. 180). The intensification of global competition has increased the emphasis of businesses on training and development. As a result, the importance of training, in the recent years, has become magnified (Holden, 1997).

In the current business environment, it has become critical for organisations to focus on training and development in order to obtain a competitive advantage (Paauwe, 2004). In the sector of retail business, it is possible to achieve a competitive edge through improvements in service quality as well as the performance of employees. McDonald's demonstrates a strategic commitment to the training and development of employees. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine the impact of training and development of the organisational level of performance of McDonald's (Raudenbush and Bryk, 2002). This study will determine how McDonald's is catering to the training and development needs of its employees in the current competitive business environment. The dissertation will present a review of training and development strategies of McDonald's.

Reason for Choosing this Subject

The quality of human resource in an organisation contributes towards the overall performance of an organisation. Training and development programs contribute towards an increase in the efficiency of employees. As a result, the performance of an organisation is enhanced. There are different aspects of training that are associated with the performance of a firm. There are a number of studies that have studied the impact of training and development on organisational performance (Bartel, 1994, pp. 421). It has been argued that an increase in training and development activities result in improvements in the productivity of employees, profitability of a firm, and the value of shareholders in short term as well as long term. The percentage of trained employees in an organisation is related to the performance of a firm (Ashton et al, 2000, pp. 20; Aycan, 2003).
