Abstract

McMinn expounds the signicance of theology in his book “Psychology, theology, and spirituality in Christian counseling”. The integration of reglious beliefs into psychological couseling is delineated. It stresses the significance of the use of the Christian belief in the psychological therapy. Concentrating on the functional facet of the integration of theology, psychology and spirituality in counseling, the scribe devotes functional demonstrations of how these localities can be incorporated in alignment to assist one predominant reason; to assist persons (McMinn 1996).

He stated that there are a few number of psychologists, who use bible in their psychological practices for counseling people. He expounded that famous innumerable Christians including Jay Adam rarely took the topics of psychology in his teachings. McMinn took his exemplary teachings in order to bridge the gap between psychology and religion. He elaborated the reformatory power of scriptures in helping people who face psychological stress. His differing decisions changed direction of psychology, and thus a huge number of people turned their views and begin to recognize the benefits of incorporating scriptures.

He believed that if a person intends to be an effective counselor then he must understand that the process of counseling is a personal process that portrays the educational background and the spiritual life of counselor. He also considered that using the practices of confession, memory of scripture, and praying with clients is an effective way of making the therapy successful. Conventionally, the counselor do not make the practices of religion in their counseling practices.

Departing religion from the mainstream counseling practices can have a very negative impact on the psychological framework of people. It is entirely contrary to the counseling practices because various psychological problems are associated with sin and confession of those sins can reduce the stress. He expounded that through the techniques of redemption, restitution, forgiveness, and worship , a counselor can assist the counselee. He stressed that through the process of integration of sin and confession in to the counseling practices, the counselor can assist the client to germinate his spiritual realm.

He expounded that the integration of forgiveness and redemption is immensely significant. Emotional relief is extracted through the concept of forgiveness. When we compare the arena of psychotherapy, the concept of redemption and forgiveness include the realm of humility, empathy, and self-awareness.
