Lack of Sleep and Facebook Usage Significantly Affect Student Grades and Academic Performance

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to enlighten and explore the impact of Facebook on the academic performance and grades of the students. In addition, the paper also analyzes the influence of student's sleeping pattern on his academic performance and academic grades. The objective of this paper is two-folds; first, the paper aims to explore the correlation between the Facebook usage of students and the academic performance. Second, the analysis in this paper evaluates the correlation of students' habit of less sleep with their academic performance and grades. The paper highlights the relationship between the study variables by using Spearman's correlation test and aims to provide a dimension for the future researchers to take guidance from this paper for their own study.

This research is constructed to address this controversial topic. The purpose of this paper is to enlighten and explore the influence of this paper is to enlighten and explore the influence of Facebook on the academic performance of the students. In addition, this research is aimed to evaluate the effect inadequate sleep on students' grades and academic failure. If an individual is not getting the right quantity or quality of sleep, their daytime functioning will suffer.

Alertness and vigilance become irregular, cognitive and motor reactions become delayed, and there is a greater chance of falling asleep in quiet settings. Children may fall asleep in class, and their task performance may suffer. Inadequate sleep seriously affects the academic performance and grades of college students; because, the students cannot convey proper attention required. Moreover, the lack of sleep causes anxiety, depression, stress and many other consequences that are hazardous for academic Excellency.

Literature Review

The rise of mass media communication has provided contemporary dimension to this world for interacting and socializing around the globe (Anderson, 2000, pp. 772-790). The social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and My Space have achieved tremendous success due to their specialized features and functions enabling individuals to interact and socialize. Nonetheless, the use these networking websites has also been subjected to several controversies.

According to different sources, the youth has been inspired by these networking activities so much that it has been deviating from their academic and professional career (Anderson & Evans, 2003, pp. 73- 91). Moreover, the time spent on Facebook deteriorates the concentration to be given to the academics and other activities. Hence, the academic career and grades of students are believed to be affected by these social networking websites. However, the individuals favoring these websites argue that these websites are contemporary medium for communication and socializing; moreover, these websites enhance students' abilities to learn and interact rather than deteriorating them.
