ABSTRACT

African American culture has its roots in the history of African-Americans, including customs and traditions from various parts of Africa. African Americans have a double identity that combines a shared group identity with other African Americans and a cultural identity they share with all Americans. Much has been said about slavery in Spanish colonial times, but little is actually known about the true history of African Americans. One of the problems that were faced Africans brought to America was just the language, even among themselves, as they were placed in groups from different regions of Africa so that they could not communicate with each other and thus prevent outbreaks of rebellion. They were then classified according to the tasks they perform in their place of origin. For example, to work in the Spanish cattle brought by the carriers of Angola, this is the reason why in the departments of Antioquia, in northeastern Colombia, and Cesar, in the north, where there is still the livestock industry, there are many descendants of these slaves. But there came a time when it was wasteful to bring slaves and many died along the way, therefore it was necessary that the Africans were in America to reproduce quickly. During the period of slavery, family and religion brought comfort of cruelty and poverty of plantation life and to continue providing an important role. Africans brought to America in slavery came from different places, spoke different languages ??and had different religious background.

When blacks won freedom and as they were gaining some economic power, considered important to marry a white woman to ascend to position their children, but white women who were an African American family were usually the "stay" or "spinsters" or the ugliest. The term mulatto is derogatory because it was believed that the fruit of a relationship between white and black was barren, the word mulatto mule is an animal that cannot breed. This mechanism also works in reverse: if a mulatto child was a white woman and they married one or African American and their descendants did the same, the sixth generation was considered black. For African Americans racial discrimination remains a reality, yet their culture has survived for centuries and is now part of the cultural richness of ...
