Learning Theory

Education is "a relatively permanent change in behavior" (R. Burns, 2002) and may come in the form of observable activity and internal processes. Explanations about what happens when these actions take place are known as learning theory. These theories include behaviorist, cognitivist, humanist, social learning and constructivist. In this essay, and behavioral cognitivists will be described, compared and contrasted in order to truly understand their approaches.

Understanding Two Different Theories

Behavioral learning theory suggests that the learning outcomes of the pleasant or unpleasant experiences in life, and cognitive theories of learning show that learning is based on mental processes. However, in warning against too closely guided by any one set of educational principles, Johnson (2003) suggests that the fixation process-oriented educational theories among those in education policy has not served the educational community, and aligning individual practitioners at the camp.

Behavioral view of psychology held that the exploratory analysis of knowledge must begin with the study of human behavior (William & Beyers, 2001). Behavioral theory has benefited from the work of young researchers, like Pavlov, Thorndike, and later on the work of BF Skinner. Work associated with the development of behavioral theories in educational psychology has allowed theorists to explore ways in which human activity can be controlled through manipulation of incentives and patterns of reinforcement.

Cognitive theory as it relates to the epistemological processes of the individual based on the idea that learning is about, as a result of processes associated with the experience, perception, memory, and open verbal thinking. Since the 1970's, the theory of information processing was the dominant focus of study for cognitive theorists. Although the list of theories related to cognitive theory of expansive one at least for the purposes of this article, it is appropriate to mention some current theories of cognition including: the theory of information processing, schema theory, and situated cognition theory.

Information processing is based on learning theory that describes the processing, storage and retrieval of knowledge in mind. Factors such as sensory registration, attention, memory and long-term memory play an important role in the theory of knowledge. Scheme theory suggests that human beings interpret the world around them based on categorical rules or scripts, the information is processed by how it fits into these rules or schemes. As epistemology, the theory of schemes dedicated to meaningful learning and the construction and modification of the conceptual networks. Situated cognition theory postulates the social character of learning is located within a community of practice in which knowledge is socially constructed.

An important component of this type of training is learning, according to the theory of social learning. Situational knowledge as theory states that a person is not a passive vessel, but rather an active self-reflective person, as such, cognitive processes develop as a result of interaction between themselves and others.
