Introduction

The reason why many of these suicides are successful due to the presence of a firearm(Spitzer 2009). Bad things can happen with guns, firearms, but can also make it easier for people to defend themselves and prevent bad things from happening. Potential victims use guns more than 2 million times a year to stop violent crime. Crimes are stopped by a defensive weapon used about five times more than the crimes are committed with firearms. In this article I will give an overview of the current problems of arms control and try to answer the question what laws stricter gun control are correlated with less violence in society(Norquist 2008).

Background

Guns kill 34,000 Americans each year, including about 5,000 youth under age 20(LaPierre 2006). At the current pace, the weapons are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the U.S. in 2003.For many years has been a debate about what to do with gun control. Guns kill 20 to 25 thousand people every year, and that includes the 15,000 annual suicides as a result of these weapons(Edel 2008).

Discussion

According to the Violence Policy Center (VPC), "America does not so much an issue of guns as a gun problem." Clarke Cochran, and others, says in his book American policymaking: An introduction, FBI data show that "a firearm used in self-defense is 100 times more likely to kill or injure its owner what is to stop a potential criminal(Cothran 2006). "What are the major policy issues regarding gun control? Cochran believes that "the question is how much of a human life worth against the desirability of unrestricted access an avid gun law-abiding firearms." James Meko, criminal justice professor at Gannon University, believes that the main issue here is the constitutional issue facing social problems. The reason is that there is a struggle in regard to arms control because the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Carter 2007)"

The amendment was to prevent the national government to disarm the state militias. This does not prevent Congress from regulating the private ownership of firearms. Many people believe that this amendment gives them the right, as private citizens to own firearms. Another important issue, according to the VPC, is the fact that "the firearms industry is exempt from federal base health and consumer product safety regulation. The weapons are the only consumer product specifically exempt from federal health and safety requirements(Bielefeld 2006). "All other product that is produced within the United States is subject to extensive testing by the federal government of the United States. When will the time of the firearms that are introduced into the same scrutiny as other products? What is the government doing about each topic? Meko feels that there is a lot of talk going on in the government action, but is not being ...
