Historic Principles of Management

Introduction

The contemporary business environment is a result of a comprehensive managerial evolutionary process. Ever since the advent of the industrial revolution which revolutionized the corporate fraternity; the managers have been motivated manufacture various products at massive scales and capture worldwide markets. The approach of the managers has always been similar throughout the historical context, which is the maximization of the productivity and the output of the human resource. In the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the role of the employees was very limited in the majority of the western based companies, as the human resource were treated as laborers rather than intellectual contributors (Abrahamson, 1996, pp. 255). As the scope of the industries increased overtime, the role of the manager also changed, and they began to facilitate and encourage the employees.

In the recent historical context, the management theories presented in the early and mid 20th century, show the subtle shift of the management styles. From a skeptical and confrontational view of the employees, the companies started to realize that the employees were the true assets, and their long term sustainability depends on the satisfaction and intellectual contribution of the labor force. In this scenario the managers assumed the roles of the facilitators of the employees, and the role of the HR function become prominent. The HR departments in the organizations have the sole responsibility to assess the needs of the employees and help them achieve their short and long term goals (Maslow, 1943, pp. 370). The employees are encouraged to take part in several developmental training programs, so as to enhance their overall skills and be able to become more productive for the organization. The modern management style is a combination of several historical management theories, which have been slightly modified to attain the highest effectiveness.
