HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to develop a teaching plan for a 51 year old woman. Due to the fact that menopause is a major transition for a woman to go through, it is important for this population to be educated about menopause, methods of treating menopausal symptoms and the side effects of each treatment in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This specific woman will be educated by a nurse because she is currently experiencing menopausal symptoms that are interfering with her daily activities. The changes her body is going through make her a good candidate for this teaching plan. An assessment, goal, teaching plan, and evaluation will be completed for this woman in order to help her cope with her symptoms.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Introduction

A discussion is carried out with a woman by the nurse. These questions with the patient, the nurse determined that the woman does not understand the changes that are happening inside her body which have triggered menopause to occur. The woman has a vague understanding of what to expect in the future due to menopause. She is experiencing hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, mood swings, and forgetfulness. The woman states that while having a hot flash her entire body feels like it is on fire and she sweats profusely. When the hot flash suddenly stops she becomes very cold and is again uncomfortable. Her difficulty sleeping is making her drowsy during the day. Her forgetfulness is affecting her when she is performing work related tasks such as payroll. She states that while doing payroll, she finds herself checking and rechecking the same numbers multiple times. This is slowing down her production and increasing her amount of time spent at work. Though the patients' symptoms have been going on for about three months, she has never taken any nonprescription based medications or treatments in order to ease her symptoms. The patient reports that she does not have a history of breast cancer or any cardiovascular disorders. Her uterus is intact. She is unaware of the risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy.
