Introduction

This paper discusses the approach taken in an tourism company in developing and planning information technology or information system strategy. Then the strengths and weaknesses of the given strategy are given. Then organizational approach given by Earl is discussed. The formation and implementation of strategy with respect to computer-based information systems (IS) are important issues in many contemporary organizations, including those in the financial services sector.

This paper describes and analyzes an in-depth study of the strategy formation and implementation process in one such organization, a UK base tourism company, and relates the process to its organizational and broader contexts; the organization is examined over a period of several years and under the contrasting leadership of two different chief executives. The case study is used to develop some general implications on IS strategy and implementation, which can be taken as themes for debate in any new situation. The paper provides an example of a more detailed perspective on processes in IS strategy and implementation than typically available in the literature.

In addition, a new framework for further research in this area is developed, which directs the researcher toward exploring the dynamic interplay of strategic content, multilevel contexts, and cultural and political perspectives on the process of change.

Information Technology Management

Information technology can be widely viewed as any product that uses a computer or communication hardware or software for its technological base. Its purpose is to increase the organization's ability to communicate accurate information in a timely manner and to aid in organizational decision making.Information systems covers all information channels i.e. formal-informal, automated-manual, strategic-tactical est. Company based Information System Strategy (ISS) is the integration of functional groups such as Information Systems, Finance and Manufacturing that drive the majority of the information and technology based projects yet each group continue to function within their own strategy.

Operations of a business concern without a structured ISS, allows each functional unit to operate with different tactical goals, which may or may not be in line with organizational long-term strategic goals. Multiple information system strategies within one company yield duplicity of information. The senior management has to devise the information system structure apt for the organization to attain organizational goals over and along with departmental goals. When the procedure is correctly conducted the advantages of ISS to the organization can be extraordinary. Information based systems are developed that achieve the goals of the entire business and not a specific department.

Strategy

The strategy which can be used to develop information system in the company is to either build the system in-house or outsource the software development. Further if it is decided to build the system in-house then it should be decided whether the system should be built module or department wise or a whole system be built and then the whole process of manual system to automated system be changed.
