Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise

Introduction

Innovation is about coping with change, "which can take two forms - in the things which an organisation offers, and change in the way in which they are created and delivered”. As international competition intensifies and product life cycles shorten, the pressure to innovate heightens. This research finds out the effect, impact and implications of innovation at Syngenta AG.

Syngenta is one of the largest corporations in the global agri-business and the world's first to focus exclusively on this sector. The company is in the category of plant protection (Syngenta Crop Protection) and market leader in the category of "commercial seed" (Syngenta Seeds) in third place. The largest competitor is Monsanto. Revenues in 2010 amounted to 11.6 billion U.S. dollars. Syngenta employs over 26,000 employees in over 90 countries. Syngenta is also in the biotechnology work.

Innovation and Creativity

Innovation consists of generation of new idea and its implementation into a new product, process or service leading to the dynamic growth of the national economy and the increase of employment as well as to a creation of pure profit for the innovative business enterprise. Within every individual, creativity is a function of three components: expertise, creative thinking skills and motivation. Innovation is an essential element for any organisation in order to survive, grow and significantly influence the direction of any industry. Development does not; however, guarantee success, but most be followed up with successive streams of innovation and change, from the incremental to the radical. The most reliable way to be successful in the industry is to innovate better and longer than the competitor, leading companies develops innovation portfolios that they can use to help sustain growth over the long term (Anderson 2001, 200).

Often, management fails to notice the implication of innovation and change, which becomes the reason of the change failure. There have been many researches and theories on innovation and change for leaders in business today. Leaders consider innovation and change as a crucial element to bring success in the business and yet they adopt an ongoing approach to the management, leadership, encouragement and required implementation of the successful change.

An inventor is someone who develops a new technology or idea, whereas an innovator is a person who manages to make the technology or idea work in practice. This is explained well as “an important distinction is normally made between invention and innovation. Invention is the first occurrence of an idea for a new product or process, while innovation is the first attempt to carry it out into practice.”

While innovation can broadly be described as the successful introduction of something new, Joseph Schumpeter defined innovation as being in one of five classes:

New goods; introducing new products and services to the market.

New methods; developing a new way of doing something.

New markets; the development of a new marketplace for products or ...
