Introduction

Meat has been among the most widely consumed and most popular foods since early mankind. The different kinds of meat include mutton, white meat, cow meat etc. It is a true fact that meat is a great source of protein is not the best. Meat is obtained from many kinds of animals including cows, buffalo, sheep, chicken, pigs and fish. The inclusion of meat in one's diet is important for the growth and development of muscle tissue as well as the strengthening of the skeletal structure. There are many sources of meat such as cows, sheep, goats, buffaloes, pigs, chicken and so on. Meat had been dubbed as an instrumental substance to consume for hundreds of years. Physicians and scientists are now refuting this and claiming that latest studies have highlighted several issues regarding meat consumption that makes this item a dangerous choice. Man has been eating meat since his arrival on Earth. It is a common fact that no other food source provides such a wide spanning range of protein and other nutrients that are crucial for human growth.

But everything about meat is not so good. Meat has been the subject of strong debates recently as evidences of its involvement in various cases of medical nature have surfaced. In Food, Inc. Barbara Kowalcyk, whose 2 year old son, Kevin, died from E.coli poisoning after eating a hamburger was interviewed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has given estimates that each year, 76 million people in America alone fall ill and the death toll from food bone illness is over 5000. It is claimed that food bone illnesses occur from the use of meat. This has sparked various movements calling for legislative action to be taken against the consumption of meat. It has also been found that the average food product has to travel around 1500 miles before it reaches the final consumer and this paves the way for various harmful bacteria to accumulate if proper transportation measures are not taken. In addition, the wide array of pesticides used on farms by farmers have adverse effects on the meat that we consume. Neurological disorders, cancers and autisms are caused in humans when this infected meat is consumed. The conditions in which animals are kept are often inhumane and approximately 10 billion animals including chickens, cattle, hogs, ducks, turkeys, lambs and sheep are killed in the US annually.
