Introduction

Educational system has evolved over the centuries. Modern implications challenged traditional practices of learning and assessment. Learning environment should be characterized by the personal attributes, maturity level and characteristics of learners. Instructional design should be developed keeping in view these attributes. In this paper, we will consider adult segment for learning, identify their characteristics and implement assessment on the basis of these characteristics. The task is to develop a learning environment that can be assessed and evaluated. Now we will discuss each of these aspects individually.

Characteristics of Adult Learners

When considering adult learners, they should have a certain set of characteristics that will influence their learning. A certain level of maturity is expected from them in understanding the topic discussed in class. They should be able to demonstrate their cognitive skills in order to ensure two way communications. Adults have a verity of experiences from their professional and personal lives. These experiences assist the learning process and in achieving astuteness of concepts and ideas. There are certain characteristics that should be considered we will discuss some of them in detail. Assuming a role of an educator following concerns of adult learning should be considered.

Adults tend to have personal and professional experiences that can be utilized for learning topics that are discussed in class. Their point of view about different topics and discussions is enriched with practical observance. They are available to share experiences and present facts for emerging future prospects. Because of these attributes holistic learning environment can be experienced. Two-way communication is administered that provide various aspects of cohesive learning.

Adults a have established values and opinions that assist their learning process. These beliefs and values are developed over time form their mental brought up, family values, social influences and societal relationships. Their knowledge of current affairs and politics provide multi-dimensioned learning.

Adult learners are self motivated towards learning. There are a number of reasons for their motivation in learning, like the relevance of course or subject to their work, their pre-developed understanding of the topic and their desire to learn. When the subject and the topic is in relation to their interest, exemplary level of motivated learning can be administered.

Adults are goal oriented, they need to understand why they are learning particular topic and are interested in practical implementation of the same. Through this, they are able to identify any flaws associated with a particular topic and what measures are to taken in order to ensure practical utilization of learned concepts.

However, there are certain negative aspects of adult learning. Adults being considered old in a class may adversely affect their performance and confidence to participate in the session. They have family and work responsibilities, which might limit they focus on the subject and devotion towards learning. The element of fatigue should also be considered, as adults are not as active and energetic as younger students (Rubenson, 2011).
