The Medical Assistant is a skilled individual whose talents range from receptionist to secretary to computer operator. She/he is an integral part of the medical office. The Medical Administrative Assistant is adept in scheduling appointments, receiving patients, scheduling hospital admissions and handling patient procedures. Her/his knowledge of medical ethics, release and consent forms and jurisprudence, as it relates to local, state and federal regulations, is an important asset in the medical office and hospital. The Medical Assistant formats and types medical correspondence. She/he types case histories; operative reports and transcribes medical dictation. She/he operates the computer and uses word processing for the medical office.

After graduating from university I am hoping to pursue a career within the Medical Assistant field. My initial plan is to undertake my current degree, then a post graduate in order to become a qualified Medical Assistant. I intend to spend the early years of my chosen career as a statutory Medical Assistant, working within the children's services, after some time spent gaining knowledge and experience and further training I hope to specialise in drugs counselling and rehabilitation and to pursue a career in these services especially with young people. At this stage I am however unsure as to whether this will be statutory, private or volunteer sector.

As a new graduate entering the field of Medical Assistant, I can expect to work with individuals, families, carers, groups, communities, the legal system and other professionals to assess needs and circumstances of those in question and to make recommendations for theses needs to be met. This type of work would therefore require communication, literacy and knowledge of travel and costs in order to meet the needs of the individual or family concerned. The work of a Medical Assistant is ongoing with the client, whether this be short term or on a longer basis.

Therefore such a career will require ongoing planning, reviewing and evaluating of the needs of those in question, in this case specifically young people. The role could require regular meeting with the service user above that of the minimum requirement and therefore case note updating, detailing and changes made in the care plan, or concerning the young person.
